Can I check my thyroid at home?

You can perform a self thyroid neck-check at home. You would need the following things:
A Mirror
A glass of water

• Your thyroid gland is located on the lower front area of your neck above the collarbone.
• Try focusing on this area in the mirror and lean your head back.
• Take a sip of water and swallow.
• Have a close look at your neck as you swallow the water. Check for any bulges in this area while swallowing the water. Remember not to confuse your Adam’s apple with your thyroid gland, your thyroid gland is located further down, close to your collarbone. Repeat this process several times.
• If you do see any bulges in this area, see your physician for further evaluation.

Is Fasting mandatory for Thyroid test?

Normally, a special preparation is not needed for a TSH blood test. If your physician has advised other blood tests, you may need to fast (not eat or drink) before the test. Your physician will let you know if there are any special instructions to follow.

How long does a TSH test take?

A TSH test takes very little time to be conducted. Once you arrive for the test, you’ll be asked to sit in a chair comfortably or lie down on a cot. If you’re wearing a dress with long sleeves, the lab technician will ask you to roll your sleeves.

The technician will then tie a band of rubber tightly around your upper arm so that the veins swell with blood. Once the technician finds an appropriate vein, they’ll insert a needle under the skin and into the vein. You may feel a pricking sensation when the needle is inserted into your skin. The technician will collect your blood in test tubes which will be sent to the laboratory for further analysis.

Once the technician has gathered a sufficient amount of blood needed for the tests, they’ll withdraw the needle and place pressure on the puncture wound until the bleeding stops. The technician will then place a bandage over the wound.
