USG is a safe procedure that uses low-power sound waves. There are no known risks of ultrasound or USG. It is normally considered as a safe procedure.

How do you prepare for an USG?

Generally. a USG examination do not need any special preparation. However, there are soe exceptions:

In case of a gallbladder ultrasound, your doctor may ask you not to eat or drink for certain period of time before the procedure.
You may require to have a full bladder for a pelvic USG. Your doctor will inform you about how much water you need to drink. Do not urinate until you are done with the test.

What happens if you eat or drink before an USG?

Your doctor will usually ask you to fast for 8 to 12 hours before your ultrasound procedure is performed. It is because undigested food in the stomach and urine in the bladder can block the sound waves. This can make it difficult for the lab technician to get a clear picture. However, drinking water is a pre-requisite for certain types of USG. For other cases, you can have small sips of water.
