Diagnostic uses
For people with specific symptoms, the HLA-B27 test may be used along with other tests like blood test, urine test, or other imaging tests in order to confirm the diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. The symptoms that might prompt a doctor to order the test might include:
- Joint pain
- Stiffness or swelling of your neck
- Stiffness of your spinal cord
- Swelling or stiffness of or chest
- Inflammation of your joints
- Inflammation of your urethra accompanied by skin lesions
- Recurring inflammation in your eye
Your doctor may also order HLA antigen tests, including tests for HLA-B27, during the following times:
- You’re undergoing a kidney transplant or
- You’re undergoing a bone marrow transplant.
These tests can be used to ensure a suitable match between you and your potential donor.
