Colonoscopy in Kolkata
People often keep putting off colonoscopy even when they are advised by the doctor to get it done. The procrastination stems from the fear of getting hurt during this invasive procedure; they are scared of bleeding, developing infections, or any other risks to the colon.
A colonoscopy is performed:
- When the doctor suspects colon cancer in a patient exhibiting symptoms
- As a colon screening test for those at high risk of developing colon cancer
- If you have had colon polyps in the past and the doctor recommends a follow-up to check if your system is polyp-free and to reduce future risk of cancer. Colon polyps are a clump of cells that form in the colon lining. They are symptomless and harmless, but they may develop into colon cancer if left unattended. You are at higher risk if you are over 50 years, are overweight, have a family history, and are a smoker. It is advisable to go for a colon screening with colonoscopy every 10 years over the age of 40.
- Colonoscopy is also done to extract a portion of the colon tissue for biopsy.
- Sometimes it is performed to remove an object in your colon.
