About Thyroid Gland
Thyroid is a small gland. This gland is located in the front part of your neck in the lower portion. It is responsible for helping to regulate many of the processes of the body including:
- metabolism
- energy generation, and
- mood.
the Thyroid gland produces two major hormones:
- triiodothyronine (T3) and
- thyroxine (T4).
If your thyroid gland is not producing enough of these hormones, then you may experience symptoms like:
- weight gain
- lack of energy, and
- depression.
This condition is called hypothyroidism.
A healthy thyroid helps in metabolism and adequate growth of your body.

If your thyroid gland is producing too many hormones, you may experience the following conditions:
- Loss of weight
- high levels of anxiety
- tremors, and
- a sense of being on a high.
This condition is called hyperthyroidism.
If your doctor is concerned about your thyroid hormone levels, he or she will order broad screening tests. This includes T4 or the TSH test. If these test results come back as abnormal, your doctor will order further tests to detect the root cause of the problem.
Functioning of the Thyroid Gland
T4 or thyroxine is the major thyroid hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. This hormone contains four iodine atoms. When an iodine atom is removed,T4 is converted to triiodothyronine or T3 to exert its effects. This occurs mainly in the liver. It also occurs in certain tissues where T3 acts like the brain. The amount of T4 that the thyroid gland is producing is controlled by another hormone. This hormone is made in the pituitary gland which is located at the base of the brain and known as thyroid stimulating hormone, abbreviated as TSH. The pituitary sees the amount of T4 and accordingly sends TSH into the bloodstream. If the pituitary gland sees minimal T4, then it produces more TSH. It does that so that the thyroid gland produces much more T4 hormone. The pituitary gland stops producing TSH, once the T4 in the bloodstream goes above a certain level. The thyroid gland and the pituitary gland in multiple ways act like a heater and a thermostat. The thermostat reads the temperature and turns on the heater when the heater is off and it becomes cold. When the heat rises to an appropriate level, it is sensed by the thermostat and the heater is turned off. Thus, the thyroid gland and the pituitary gland, works like a heater and thermostat, turning on and off.
A T3 thyroid test cost in Kolkata is usually around Rs. 400
A T4 thyroid test cost in Kolkata is around Rs. 400
A TSH thyroid test price in Kolkata is normally about Rs. 450
