Bilirubin: What exactly is it?

Bilirubin is a yellowish substance found in your blood which is formed after red blood cells break down. It then travels all the way through your liver, gallbladder, and digestive tract before being excreted.

Typically, normal bilirubin levels are considered somewhere between 0.3 and 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

A bilirubin level which is more than 1.2 mg/dL is considered as high.

A condition where a person is having high bilirubin levels is called hyperbilirubinemia. High bilirubin level is usually considered as a sign of an underlying condition. It is therefore important to follow up with a doctor if test results show you have high bilirubin.

Many babies are also born with high bilirubin. This condition is often referred to as newborn jaundice. It causes yellow-tinted eyes and tints in newborns. This condition happens because, at birth, the liver often can’t fully process the bilirubin. This although is a temporary condition. It usually resolves on its own within a few weeks.

Bilirubin test cost in Kolkata is around Rs 250.

What actually causes high Bilirubin?

High bilirubin can be a sign of several underlying health conditions. Your doctor will analyze your symptoms and test results and then narrow down a diagnosis. High bilirubin can be caused by a number of different conditions like:

  • Gallstones – Gallstones may form if your body is producing too much bilirubin due to a liver condition. They are also formed if your liver is creating too much cholesterol.
  • Gilbert’s Syndrome – It is a genetic liver condition where your liver does not process bilirubin properly and it is built up in your bloodstream.
  • Liver dysfunction – Liver dysfunction is any condition that affects the function of your liver. Bilirubin to build up in your blood due to this condition. This condition is usually caused if your liver loses its ability to remove and process bilirubin from your bloodstream.
  • Hepatitis – Hepatitis happens when an inflation is caused in your liver due to a viral infection. Your liver cannot process bilirubin when it is inflamed. Bilirubin is built up in your blood as a result.
  • Bile duct inflammation – Your liver is connected to your gallbladder through bile ducts. They help to move bile, containing bilirubin, from your liver and from gallbladder into your intestines. Bile cannot be drained properly if your bile ducts are blocked or inflamed which can lead to an increased level of bilirubin.
  • Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy – It is a temporary condition that can happen during the last trimester of pregnancy. It causes bile drainage from the liver to either slow down or stop entirely which, in turn, makes it harder for the liver to process bilirubin from blood, leading to high bilirubin levels.
