Grab The Best EMG Test with Flexible Cost from AccuHealth Diagnostics

Electromyography or EMG is a diagnostic procedure. This evaluates the health condition of muscles and also the nerve cells that control these muscles. These nerve cells are known as motor neurons and they transmit electrical signals. These electric signals cause muscles to contract and relax. An EMG signal translates these signals into graphs or numbers. This helps your doctors to make a diagnosis.

An EMG test will be ordered by a doctor when someone is showing symptoms of a muscle disorder or nerve disorder. These symptoms may include numbness or tingling or unexplained weakness in the limbs. EMG results can help the doctor diagnose various diseases like muscle disorders, nerve disorders, and also disorders affecting the connection between nerves and muscles.

Some doctors also refer to electromyography as an electrodiagnostic exam.

EMG test charges vary from location to location and from one service provider to another. EMG test cost is usually around Rs. 3000.

    Why is electromyography performed?

If you’re experiencing symptoms that may indicate a muscle or nerve disorder; your doctor may ask to perform an EMG. Some symptoms of an EMG may include:

    • tingling
    • numbness
    • muscle weakness
    • muscle pain or cramping
    • paralysis
    • involuntary muscle twitching (or tics)

The results of an EMG test can help your doctor determine the underlying cause of the symptoms you may be experiencing. Possible causes could include:

    • muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy
    • disorders that affect the ability of the motor neuron to send electrical signals to your muscles
    • radiculopathies
    • peripheral nerve disorders. These disorders often affect the nerves outside the spinal cord like carpal tunnel syndrome
    • nerve disorders, like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS

How do I prepare for electromyography?

You need to make sure to notify your doctor about any over-the-counter medications or prescription medications that you may be taking. You also need to inform your doctor if you have a pacemaker or if you have an implantable defibrillator in your body. You may not be able to have an EMG test if you have any of these medical conditions or devices.

You should do the following beforehand if you’re able to have an EMG:

    • Before starting the procedure, avoid smoking for at least three hours.
    • You need to take a shower or bathe in order to remove any oils that you may have on your skin. Make sure that you do not apply any creams or lotions afterwards.
    • Wear comfortable clothing during the procedure so that it doesn’t obstruct the area that your doctor will be evaluating. Your doctor or the lab technician may ask you to change into a hospital gown right before the procedure starts.

At AccuHealth Diagnostics, our EMG study cost is pretty affordable. If you are looking for a superior quality EMG test at a reasonable charge near you, you can certainly get in touch with us.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How painful is an EMG test?

The neurologist will insert an electrode needle into the muscle to check its activity only once, but depending on the extent of testing, you may have to take several insertions over a period of time. The procedure is not painful in itself, except that you feel a twinge or a mild shock when the needle is inserted into the muscle. This is comparable to giving blood. However, you must communicate your discomfort to the doctor if the pain becomes unbearable. There might be slight muscle soreness for up to a few days.

What happens if EMG is abnormal?

Abnormal EMG would indicate neuromuscular problems like nerve or muscle deficit and dysfunction, neuropathy, muscle degeneration/dystrophy, compressed nerves, nerve and muscle injuries, or diseases. An abnormal EMG will produce odd patterns, graphs, and sounds on the monitor. In an abnormal reading, the doctor will detect an activity even when the muscle is at rest, or will find it abnormal during muscle contraction.

How long does an EMG test take?

The electromyography test can take anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the extent of the test, i.e., how many nerves and muscles are being tested. During the test, the neurologist studies and listens intently to the electrical signals that travel from the electrode needles to the screening monitor.

Does an EMG test show nerve damage?

Yes, the EMG test results can be effective in diagnosing nerve damage, and assessing the extent of the damage. However, like any other diagnostic procedure, the test results are not 100% foolproof.

What diseases can an EMG detect?

The EMG can detect nerve and muscle dysfunction, neuromuscular diseases, nerve and muscle injuries, movement problems, muscle degeneration and dystrophy, and other conditions like cervical spondylosis, sciatica, polymyositis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, carpal tunnel syndrome, Guillain Barre syndrome, Lambert Eaton syndrome, herniated disc, etc.

How painful is an EMG test for hands, on a scale from 0 to 10?

There is a slight tingly feeling when the needle electrodes are inserted into the muscle to record its activity during a nerve conduction study. The experienced pain of the test never exceeds a moderate level. It could be a 4 or a 5 on 10 depending on the severity of the shock one receives when a muscle is stimulated.

What is the EMG test used to diagnose?

The electromyography test is an important diagnostic tool to evaluate muscle and nerve health. Nerve cells control muscle movement, and the test results can be used to assess a wide range of neuromuscular problems like nerve and muscle damage/dysfunction/dystrophy/ diseases, and a variety of conditions like ALS, sciatica, cervical spondylosis, herniated disc, polymyositis, myasthenia gravis, etc.

What does a positive EMG test mean?

A positive EMG test will record the abnormal electrical activity of a muscle when it contracts under stimulation. This would indicate a nerve or a muscle disorder, and the neurologist may advise further clinical tests to identify the exact problem and to prepare a treatment plan for you.

Why would a doctor order an EMG test?

An EMG test helps a doctor to ascertain if you are suffering from any of the nerve/muscle disorders or conditions when you show symptoms like muscle weakness, muscle cramps, twitching, spasms, numbness in any part of the body like the face, hands, arms, legs, feet, etc, or muscle paralysis.
