Get Quick, Accurate Dengue Fever Oriented Blood Test & Platelet Count with Accuhealth Diagnostics

Dengue fever is a viral infection. The bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito transmits the disease. Dengue fever is a flu-like illness. It affects infants, young children and adults. No specific treatment or medication is there for dengue fever Severe dengue is a potentially lethal complication. But early diagnosis and careful clinical management can save lives.

The dengue virus enters the bloodstream when an infected mosquito bites someone. The virus binds to platelets and replicates. This leads to the multiplication of the infectious virus. The infected platelet cells then end to destroy normal platelets. This is a major reason for platelet count drop when someone is infected with dengue fever.

Complete Understanding of Dengue Platelets Level Count

Platelets or thrombocytes are a component of blood. Their primary function is blood clotting to stop bleeding. They also have a role in the body’s defence mechanism. The normalplatelet count in a human body ranges from 1.5 to 4 lakh. In dengue, the platelet count can drastically fall below 1.5 lakh.

Depending on the risk basis platelet count, dengue patients may fall in either category:

Platelet count (per cubic millimeter of blood)Category
    >100,000The patient is at no risk
40,000 -100,000The patient is at low risk
21,000 - 40,000The patient is at moderate risk
< 20,000The patient is at high risk

Complications of Low Platelet count in Dengue fever

A close check on a patient’s platelet count needs to be kept even after the fever subsides. This is because some patients with dengue fever can go on to develop dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which is characterized by a platelet count of below 1 lakh.

This is marked by leaky blood capillaries. It can lead to failure of the circulatory system and shock. Further, if DHF is not treated promptly, it can possibly cause death in extremely serious cases.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum platelet count for dengue?

The platelet count in a normal, healthy person is between 150,000 and 250,000 per microlitre of blood. About 80% to 90% of patients with dengue will have levels below 100,000. About 10% to 20% of patients will see critically low levels of platelet count of about 20,000 or less.

In how many days will the platelets decrease in dengue?

Platelets normally decrease between 3-7 days in case of dengue patients.

Why are platelets low in dengue?

The dengue virus enters the bloodstream when an infected mosquito bites a human. It binds to platelets and replicates, leading to multiplication of infectious viruses. The infected platelet cells try destroying the normal platelets. This is one of the major causes for the drop in the platelet count in dengue fever.

What should be done for low platelet count in dengue?

While most of the patients with low platelet counts recover on their own, studies show that only about 5 percent of dengue patients face complications such as severe bleeding and thus will require transfusions.

How much platelet count is normal in dengue?

Platelet count can go to as low as 40000 to 20000 in dengue versus the normal platelet count of 150,000 and 250,000 per microlitre of blood in a normal person.

What does a platelet count of 70000 mean?

Spontaneous bleeding may occur when the platelet count drops to 50,000 to 75,000 per cubic millimetre, and particularly to 10,000 to 20,000 per cubic millimetre.

Does platelet count decrease in dengue?

Dengue is one of the mosquito-borne viral infections. Dengue fever results in a drastic decrease in platelet count. Therefore, it is important to diagnose platelet count as early as possible for dengue patients in order to treat dengue effectively as there is no specific medication to manage dengue.
