An ECG test measures the heartbeat and monitors the activities of a person’s heart. An ECG test is

How accurate is an ECG?

ECG is not a 100% accurate test. Data suggests that often the findings of a measurement are
completely normal even though a heart attack has taken place.

What is a normal ECG reading?

An ECG reading is usually taken in milliseconds. The different types of readings include –
● PR interval – PR interval is measured from the beginning of the P wave. It is measured till the
first deflection of the QRS complex.
Normal range for the PR interval is 120 – 200 ms or 3 – 5 small squares on ECG paper).
● QRS duration – It is measured from the first deflection of the QRS complex to the end of the
QRS complex at an isoelectric line.
Normal range of QRS duration is up to 120 ms or 3 small squares on ECG paper).
● QT interval – It is measured from the first deflection of the QRS complex to the end of the T
wave at an isoelectric line.
Normal range of QT interval is up to 440 ms (though varies with heart rate and maybe slightly
longer in females)

An ECG or electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of your heart when you are at rest. It
provides information about your heart rate and heart rhythm. An ECG shows if there is an
enlargement of the heart due to high blood pressure (hypertension) or evidence of a previous heart
attack (myocardial infarction).

What is the easiest way to read ECG?

ECG paper comprises a grid of squares – both small and large. Each small square represents 40
milliseconds in time along the horizontal axis. Each larger square contains 5 small squares. A large
square thus represents 200 milliseconds. These square markings allow easy measurement of cardiac
timing intervals.

What is the duration of one ECG?

There are 3 different parts of the cardiac cycle. Each stage should be completed within a specific time
