A sputum culture test checks for bacteria or another type of organism that may be causing an infection in your lungs or in the airways leading to the lungs. Sputum, also known as phlegm, is a thick type of mucus that is made in your lungs. You can cough sputum if you have an infection or chronic illness affecting the lungs or airways.

Sputum is not like your spit or like your saliva. Sputum contains cells from the immune system. These cells help fight the bacteria, fungi, or other foreign substances in your lungs or airways. The foreign materials are trapped by the thickness of sputum. This allows cilia or tiny hairs in the airways to push it through the mouth and be coughed out.

Sputum test price varies from location to location. Sputum test price in Kolkata is usually around Rs. 550.

    The Different Colors Of Sputum

Sputum can be of several different colors and the colors can help identify the type of infection you may have or if a chronic illness has become worse:

Clear – This usually means that no disease is present but large amounts of clear sputum may be a sign of lung disease.

White or gray – This is considered to be normal and an increased amount may also mean lung disease.

Dark yellow or green – This often indicates bacterial infections like pneumonia.

Yellowish-green – Sputum is also common in people with cystic fibrosis which is an inherited disease. This disease causes mucus to build up in the lungs and other organs.

Brown – This often shows up in people who smoke which is also a common sign of black lung disease. Black lung disease is a serious condition. This can happen if you have long-term exposure to coal dust.

Pink – This may be a sign of pulmonary edema and is a condition in which excess fluid builds up in the lungs.

Red – This may be an early sign of lung cancer which may also be a sign of a pulmonary embolism. This is a life-threatening condition in which a blood clot from a leg or other part of the body breaks loose and travels to the lungs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How are sputum culture tests done?

In a sputum culture test, you will have to cough deeply and spit out the sputum into a special sterile container. The pathologist will ask for at least 2 millilitres of sputum sample to conduct the test successfully. The sample is then taken to the laboratory and allowed to sit for two or more days to observe any microbial growth. Once the pathologist detects some kind of growth, they conduct further tests on the sample to determine whether it is a bacterium, fungus, or virus.

What can a sputum test reveal?

Testing sputum can reveal the presence of infection-causing microorganisms in your lungs or airways leading to the lungs. A sputum culture helps a doctor effectively diagnose respiratory conditions and diseases like bronchitis, lung abscess, pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis.

What does a positive sputum test mean?

A positive sputum test indicates the presence of harmful bacteria, fungi, or viruses in the sputum sample collected. Such findings, specified either numerically as +1 to +4 or with terms like ‘rare’, ‘few’, ‘moderate’, and ‘abundant’, support the diagnosis of lung infections.

What is the sputum test for TB called?

The sputum test for TB is called Acid-Fast Bacillus (AFB) Test. AFB bacteria causes tuberculosis or TB. AFB tests are of two types – one is the AFB Smear in which your sample is smeared on a sterile glass slide and inspected with a microscope; the other is the AFB culture in which the sample is observed in a controlled environment for 6 – 8 weeks to detect bacterial growth.

What do rare squamous epithelial cells in sputum mean?

In short, it determines the quality of sputum samples. To explain it further, squamous epithelial cells form the lining of the air sacs in your lungs. A minimal number of squamous epithelial cells per low power field in a microscope indicates that a good sample quality for a sputum culture has been collected.

Who tests blood and sputum in a lab?

A pathologist tests biological samples like blood, sputum, and other body fluids in a laboratory to diagnose diseases.
